1882. Deafness (D-82-002)

Following the appearance in early 1878 of articles about the phonograph, which drew attention to his own deafness, Edison began receiving inquiries about his proposed invention of a hearing aid. (See Thomas A. Edison Papers Microfilm Edition, Part I, 15:3-166.) This folder contains correspondence inquiring about the current state of the invention.

Approximately 20 percent of the documents have been filmed. These items received significant replies or were written by individuals associated with Edison.

A WONDERFUL DEVICE FOR THE RELIEF OF THE DEAF. | Patented U. 8. May 4, 1880 ; andia Ounata March 11, 1881.

at EARPHONE enables the deaf to hear sounds and conversations

otherwise beyond their range, bringing into use the Trifacial nerve by a telephonic communication with the inner ear. Lt does not strain the drum of the ear as is unavoidable with the use of trumpets. It takes off the continual strain on the organs of the ear, cheney benefitting them, and has often produced a perceptible benefit im the natural hearing of those using it. 4 The principles involved ih the Eurphone are the refinement and com- pression of sound. Means have been discovered by which sound can be refined from 100 to 20,000 times.

No INJURY TO TUE EAR CAN POSSIBLY COME FROM THEIR USE,

while the use of ordinary tubes, also tin trumpets and many other appli- ances oveasion injurious effeets. Out of thousands who have tried this instrument, but ten per ct. could not find relief, and these cases were paralyzed facial nerves.

The Earphone is bell shaped, finished with silver nickel, light weight. Can have ribbon attached so as to hang it on the neck and have it al- ways nt hand and ready for use, ‘They are in four sizes, graded in power of ‘augmenting sound, and should be fitted to the case requiring aid.

This Earphone is leading all other devices, and any one interested in this subject should not fail to examine this Gondertul javeatton,

For heaving piano music it is delightful, bringing out the full tone and power, :

: All instruments to be of any value to the deaf must from the nature of acoustics be of 0 certain aize and plainly visible when in use. The quicker deaf people recognize these facts and use one of these Earphones the greater will be the advantage to them and the more comfort their friends will have whe now make a painful effort to converse with them,

Earphones are made of metal—not easily injured—will last a careful person a lifetime; ave.one of the greatest collectors of sound known. In many cases the state of natural hearing will admit of the use at home of the tubing extension, which makes a convenient change.

....: PRICE LIST.

1882. Drexel, Morgan & Company (D-82-003) [not filmed]

This folder contains correspondence about routine financial transactions undertaken by Drexel, Morgan & Company for Edison or his companies. Material relating to Drexel, Morgan & Company's role as a financier of Edison's electric light and telephone ventures can be found in folders on those subjects.

1882. Edison, T.A. - General (D-82-004)

This folder contains documents, primarily correspondence, covering a wide variety of subjects. Some of the material relates to personal matters, such as Edison's rental of a house at 25 Gramercy Park in New York City. Also included are documents that deal with more than one subject, such as a letter about both the electric light and the telephone. Documents concerning subjects that do not fall under the main subject categories are also filed in this folder.

Approximately 80 percent of the documents have been filmed. Duplicate copies of correspondence, third-party correspondence unrelated to Edison, and unanswered fan mail have not been filmed. Unsolicited requests for Personal favors, for loans and exhibits of inventions, and for information about Edison have not been filmed except in cases where a significant answer has been found.
